Opening Session: Reimagining the Future Power Infrastructure of Buildings
For most in the built environment, AC (Alternating Current) is a forgone conclusion when it comes to providing power to buildings. History tells us that the battle between AC and DC (Direct Current) at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 would determine the future of an electrical standard throughout the world. AC's ability to safely travel long distances won the day and the rest is history. Today, we find ourselves reimagining the future of the power infrastructure of buildings as technological innovation allows us to harness DC for smarter, more sustainable buildings. This opening session will review the current state of the building power infrastructure and question the rate of adoption of a technology that has the potential to shape the future of buildings, where they become intelligent ecosystems that prioritize sustainability and performance.

Convergence and the Disruption of Electrification
"In the next decade we’ll experience more technological progress and breakthroughs than in the past 100 years,” predicted Peter Diamandis in January 2020 and we’ve already witnessed some extraordinary technological advances, some general and others specifically impacting the built environment. With the current focus on decarbonization, net zero energy, operational efficiency and optimizing asset value, a number of these new technologies are gaining acceptance. Among them are Power over Ethernet (PoE), Fault Managed Power (FMP) and Microgrids. In this session, we’ll explore the deployment of these technologies and share insights on the challenges and opportunities. As an added bonus, we’ll also take a peek into some of the most recent technological developments such as Power Beaming, Power over Fiber (PoF), Space-Based Solar, and more. The rapidity of change requires agility as we navigate these rapid advancements, ensuring we are prepared to adapt, innovate, and integrate emerging technologies that will reshape our world.

From Source to Sink: The DC-Powered Building
In a world where DC-powered devices dominate – from laptops, phones, and IoT devices to LED lighting, motors, and HVAC systems – most buildings still rely on AC power distribution. This session explores the disconnect between how we generate and use power versus how we distribute it within buildings. With the rise of renewable energy sources that naturally produce DC electricity, the inefficiencies of converting DC to AC and back are becoming increasingly apparent. Transitioning to a DC-powered infrastructure not only reduces energy losses but also enhances flexibility in building design. This shift supports agile, adaptable office environments, streamlining installation, and minimizing disruptions when reconfiguring spaces. Discover how a holistic DC power strategy from source to sink can significantly lower costs, reduce environmental impact, and set new standards in safe, energy-efficient building design.

The Power of PoE: A Look at the Past, Present, and Future
Power over Ethernet (PoE) has been around for a few decades. Eliminating the need for separate power and data cables, early PoE applications were used to power devices in hard-to-reach places. Introduced in 2003, the initial PoE standard allowed for the delivery of up to 15.4 watts of power per port. Since then, the technology has evolved with newer standards delivering up to 60 or even 100 watts of power, exhibiting a transformative potential for building owners, developers, and facility managers seeking to enhance the performance, sustainability, and adaptability of their spaces. Increasingly used for IoT devices, PoE now plays an essential role in powering sensors and smart lighting systems, significantly shaping the modern smart building ecosystem. This session will review the history of PoE, unpack the complexities of the technology, and provide a glimpse into its future.

Enabling Efficiency: Closing Gaps in Codes & Standards (Electrical Safety, Energy Codes, and Equipment Standards)
Eliminating losses from AC conversions play a part in both helping buildings save energy and tune grid demand through efficient use of on-site renewables and storage. Our national model energy codes must provide a clear path to inform the nation's building designers that efficient DC has arrived, while ANSI's voluntary consensus standards must address safe equipment operation and safe construction techniques. As DC-powered infrastructure graduates from LED lighting to PV, Energy Storage, EVs and HVAC equipment, it is critical to leverage new international equipment standards for voltage levels and distribution safety mechanisms. This session will quickly summarize the ongoing activities in the US and across the world, highlight gaps, and elicit a call to action for future-forward DC adopters to collect evidence of savings and allocate resources to engage these bodies directly.

Building the Business Case: Insights from the Early Adopters
Given the current market uncertainty and regulatory changes on the horizon, building owners, developers, and operators are increasingly challenged to adopt innovative technologies that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and overall building performance. As reviewed in previous sessions, PoE and DC power systems are emerging as key opportunities for this transformation, offering significant benefits in terms of energy savings, operational flexibility, and reduced costs. However, making the business case for these technologies requires a clear understanding of their value proposition and return on investment (ROI). This session will provide a comprehensive guide to building the business case for PoE and DC power systems. Attendees will learn how to evaluate near and long-term financial, operational, and environmental benefits of these technologies, and how to present a compelling case to stakeholders for their adoption. The discussion will feature insights from those who have navigated the PoE and DC power landscape implementing the technologies in major projects.
