Building LinkedIn’s Office of Tomorrow
How AI Mapping Shapes the Hybrid Work Experience
It’s a sunny summer’s day in Sunnyvale, and LinkedIn’s employees are getting ready for work. As they step out of their homes and head to LinkedIn’s redesigned campus, they know today’s work experience will be seamless, thanks to the cutting-edge technology that awaits them.
Hybrid work at LinkedIn is a clear success. 71% of its 18,000+ global employees choose to come to the office at least part-time. So, what makes the commute worth their while? The answer lies in LinkedIn's approach to viewing the office as an amenity - a space designed to foster connections, collaboration, and productivity. To make this a reality, LinkedIn is leveraging technology to support hybrid work, with AI mapping, occupancy sensors, and digital solutions used to embrace a flexible and employee-centric approach.
Digitizing LinkedIn’s Workplace with AI-Built Maps
In the traditional office set up, employees often spend a significant amount of time searching for meeting rooms or available desks. Pointr's indoor mapping and wayfinding technology, embedded within LinkedIn's office environment, equips employees with interactive digital campus maps that allow them to efficiently find rooms, desks, and colleagues.
The platform offers:
- Digital Campus Maps: Interactive 2D and 3D maps guide employees through the complex office layout, ensuring easy navigation between floors and buildings.
- Integrated with Room Booking: Employees can reserve meeting rooms and desks. Once booked, Pointr provides turn-by-turn directions, reducing time spent searching for meeting spaces.
- Usage Analytics: Smart analytics provide insights into employee intent, such as the most frequently searched amenities, meeting room usage, and overall employee flow within the building, helping LinkedIn optimize its space based on employee needs.
Daniel Hampshire, Senior Workplace Manager at LinkedIn, says, "Pointr has been fantastic in digitizing our office buildings, delivering fast, flawless execution with a true 'get it done' attitude. Their team's expertise and quick problem-solving made the entire process smooth, and we went from a one-building pilot to a global rollout in just a month. The dedication and quality of their product are simply impressive."
Real-Time Meeting Room Availability
This experience is further enhanced by real-time availability data provided by Density occupancy sensors. A “traffic light” system uses green and red lights to indicate room and desk availability. A green light means the space is available and a red light shows it’s already in use.
Employees can check the app to see which meeting rooms and phone rooms are available, ensuring they can quickly find a workspace. This transparency ensures efficient space management. LinkedIn can understand how different spaces are utilized across its offices, ensuring that every square foot contributes to a better, more efficient employee experience.
Gen AI for Smart Hybrid Work
LinkedIn is taking this a step further by exploring AI-driven solutions for auto-scheduling meetings based on a user’s location and occupancy data. This forward-looking approach could allow the system to automatically find the most efficient meeting space based on proximity and real-time office occupancy. Additionally, ChatGPT-style bots could help answer questions like “Where is my meeting?” by providing employees with facility maps and directions to the relevant meeting room.
Building an Office That Adapts
Hybrid offices must constantly evolve, and this is made possible by technology. With continuous insights into space utilization and employee preferences, LinkedIn can ensure they build an office that evolves as the needs of employees change. On large campuses, digital maps and location services offer numerous valuable use cases, including:
- Mark My Car: Employees can mark their car's location on a map, making it easy to find their parked vehicle later.
- Find My Colleagues: This feature allows employees to share their real-time location with colleagues, streamlining coordination and collaboration across the office.
