Microsoft | Redmond Campus Modernization

The IBcon Smart Building Best Practice Showcase is an annual event held at the Realcomm | IBcon conference where real estate leaders present their most innovative, technology driven commercial and corporate real estate projects. These projects demonstrate leading-edge technologies and vision for intelligent and adaptive design that is transforming the next generation of IT-enabled real estate. The Weekly News Briefing will feature a unique Showcase project each week.
Microsoft began planning their Redmond headquarters modernization in 2017, a project expected to be completed in seven years. Located in the community of Puget Sound, the campus offers an intelligent and intuitive workplace experience. Flexible and agile for the modern hybrid workforce, the design reflects Microsoft’s focus on connectivity, accessibility, employee wellness, and sustainability.
Plans included construction of 17 new buildings, all of them Energy-Smart; they will use Azure for building system monitoring and optimization of energy. The site has many sustainability features, including a state-of-the-art, all-electric utility plant that’s designed to be 50 percent more efficient than a typical central utility plant. (Microsoft has made a commitment to be carbon negative by 2030.) It is a Zero Waste Certified campus and will reuse harvested rainwater in flush fixtures; by utilizing low-flow systems, the campus is projected to save over 5.8 million gallons of water annually. These are just a few of the many sustainability attributes of this campus of the future.
