Kaiser Permanente National Portfolio | Carbon Neutral: The Climate Smart Healthcare System

The IBcon Smart Building Best Practice Showcase is an annual event held at the Realcomm | IBcon conference where real estate leaders present their most innovative, technology driven commercial and corporate real estate projects. These projects demonstrate leading-edge technologies and vision for intelligent and adaptive design that is transforming the next generation of IT-enabled real estate. The Weekly News Briefing will feature a unique Showcase project each week.
In 2016, Kaiser Permanente set a vision to achieve carbon neutrality by 2020. In line with this ambitious goal, Kaiser participated in the Smart Energy Analytics Campaign - a public-private partnership from the Department of Energy and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab that couples technical assistance with data collection to inform research and field study priorities. They began with a pilot implementing FDD software, followed by fuel cell installation and solar photovoltaics. FDD software pulls data from the BAS and prioritizes energy, maintenance, and comfort issues—automatically quantifying the cost of energy waste. During the four-site pilot, Kaiser identified energy savings that would repay the cost of the pilot in less than six months. Kaiser now also leverages FDD for new investments, requiring at least a year of FDD implementation in all new building construction projects and plant maintenance projects with significant building controls related work. Kaiser achieved carbon neutrality in 2020 and is on the way to “carbon net positive” by 2025.

When It Comes To Managing Properties’ Parking, Technology Is Key It’s easy for developers and real estate owners to think of parking as a necessary evil.
