Skanska | 17xM: New Vision for the Modern Workplace

The IBcon Smart Building Best Practice Showcase is an annual event held at the Realcomm | IBcon conference where real estate leaders present their most innovative, technology driven commercial and corporate real estate projects. These projects demonstrate leading-edge technologies and vision for intelligent and adaptive design that is transforming the next generation of IT-enabled real estate. The Weekly News Briefing will feature a unique Showcase project each week.
17xM is Skanska’s new vision for the modern workplace. The 17xM team conducted a robust multi stakeholder visioning process to understand how generations of users might interact with spaces and infrastructure over the life cycle of the building. They established four design principles as basis for the project: Customizable Flexibility, Integrated Technology, Safety & Security, and Sustainability & Wellness. These driving principles enabled delivery of a smart building with a technological backbone that could satisfy use cases derived during the visioning phase.
“The network and controls platform integrates tenant-facing elements with back-of-house engineering functions for property management needs,” said Justin Chapman, Director of Development, Skanska USA. “Tenants may use as many or as few features the system offers, depending on their operating needs - that’s where integrated technology and customizable flexibility meet. Our programming and design efforts led 17xM to become the first SmartScore certified building in North America, something we’re very proud of.”
