change
Facilities, like many other organizations, have carbon
footprint and sustainability goals. These are not only
good for the global environment, they are also good
for business. Sustainability initiatives save energy costs,
help companies qualify for incentive programs, foster
brand loyalty and goodwill, and prepare our facilities
for the future.
One thing most corporate social responsibility
initiatives have in common is a necessity to affect
behavioral change within the organization. To meet
sustainability goals, the entire team (from the C-suite
to the laborers) must be involved.
As Benjamin Franklin famously quipped, “Tell me
and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve
me and I learn.”Telling employees about the impor-
tance of operational efficiencies may create short-term
changes (until they forget), teaching them about it
may inspire them to remember (but not necessarily
act), but by involving them, they will learn and change
their ways.
To involve the entire team requires data. Present re-
al-time data gathered for specific pieces of equipment,
share benchmarks, and develop sustainability goals to-
gether. Explain the implications of the escalating costs
and highlight the benefits that come from energy and
operational efficiencies. Show a clear ROI on how the
bottom line can be affected and stress how each team
member can make a difference to the company, its
profits, and its global footprint.
With the entire team on board, acknowledge
those who make changes and celebrate quantifiable
successes. With this level of involvement and empow-
erment, long-term behavioral change will be a huge
contributor to the company’s sustainability goals.
Facility Operations Improvement through Visibility
To improve facility operations, we first need a clear
understanding of the current state of our facilities and
the systems running them. Many Facility Managers are
armed with only a monthly utility bill as data about their
consumption, or a snapshot that provides only partial
information about energy usage at the site level. But knowing an
overall energy spend for the facility is not much better than not
knowing anything at all. To effect real change, create improved
processes, recommend and take actions to better the facility as
a whole, Facility Managers must arm themselves with real-time
energy data about the equipment and systems that comprise the
facility’s ecosystem.
