Reaching New Heights

Corporate Real Estate
Innovation echnology enablement in commercial real estate began with
a quest for efficiency and cost savings. Searching for ways to
streamline an individual process or saving on an individual utility
was the goal for achieving operational success. As better single
solutions moved into the market, the next step was developing
T those technologies to encompass and streamline other areas.
Professional roles began changing; understanding the context of the business
problem and the technology solution became paramount. Factors that drive
decision making evolved from “Which technology do we invest in?” to “Which
technology is the best fit for the greater system?”
As smart, connected, high performance and inter-operational buildings
gained momentum, converging skillsets were needed to achieve synchroniza-
tion of systems. Organizations began to redefine who the customer was, and
the best ways to serve them. It became imperative for business to understand
IT, and for IT to step into the end-user’s shoes. Throughout this process, data and
meaningful analytics surged to the forefront of strategic planning. The advanced
requirements of networked systems led to emerging technologies from provid-
ers including SaaS, cloud, and mobile solutions. Social media and mobile apps
changed the definitions of success yet again.
Where are we now? Commercial real estate is facing a critical juncture. As
we move forward into the fast-moving technology landscape, virtual reality,
robotics, artificial intelligence, drones, and Blockchain are being added—how
do we anticipate and benefit from these opportunities? How will we lead the
workforce of the future?
RealcommEDGE met with this year’s Conference Advisory Council Co-
Chairmen to learn what their companies are focusing on and to discuss how
these new technologies are affecting their strategy and vision. As they shared
their considerable expertise, each touched on a common thread: that the way
forward is through standardization of methods and documentation, true scal-
ability and the inclusion of people who all have a stake in the vision. The word of
the future is collaboration, based on actionable data. Only the confluence of all
these different areas will bring success in this brave new world we are entering.
