necessary conditions (quick wins) for your minimum viable framework (MVF) for hybrid working to be successful. Take an iterative approach by checking in with stakeholders, setting new goals, and recalibrating priorities to optimize your MVF over time.
4. Systems & Tools – Ensure that they are future-proof
Many workplace systems and tools were developed
for the on-site working model, so they will need to be re-assessed to determine if they are compatible with
a hybrid implementation. For example, workspace management tools currently in place to manage buildings and assets may be suboptimal for a hybrid model of workplace-as-a-service (WaaS), where the key unit of value is the employee, not their cubicle. Be sure to align recruitment, onboarding, training, performance management, and reward systems with the new hybrid plan, which will not only be location independent, but is also likely to be time and time zone independent.
5. Physical Environment – Assess your need for space in quantitative and qualitative terms
We have already seen that many, if not most, organi- zations are planning to reduce their corporate real estate footprint. While this is an understandable
response to economic uncertainty, the length of office leases is likely to make it a longer-term strategy. In
the meantime, re-evaluate and re-define the role of office space to address current needs. Instead of a warehouse for dedicated workstations, the hybrid office will be a hub for collaboration experiences, connection with colleagues, brand & cultural expression, and engagement with the wider community. Use an Agile approach to experiment and iterate on a flexible office design that will change as you learn.
The pandemic has clearly rendered the traditional workplace a thing of the past. We must approach the future with an appreciation for what we have learned from this experience, and with a strategy that is grounded in the here and now. This situation may be unique, in that organizations worldwide are facing the same set of questions and decisions—but we are all learning together. The time to act is now.
