The Realcomm | IBcon 2018 conference, one of the most powerful gatherings for the commercial and corporate real estate, facilities and technology industries, was held June 4-8 in Las Vegas. The event brought together over 2,000 leaders from more than 20 countries, including Canada, Australia, Japan, U.K., Singapore, China, France, India, Germany, South Africa and many more. This year also marked the 20th anniversary for Realcomm, which contributed to the remarkable turnout and undeniable buzz of energy and celebration that made the event one of our most successful ever!

Adding to that energy was the hotel itself. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, a unique luxury resort in the heart of the Strip, provided not only a great meeting environment, but also world class dining and party experiences in the evenings with their many restaurants and nightclubs.

The week kicked off with a Golf Outing on Monday, followed by seven pre-conference events on Tuesday, two full days of education sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, and finished up with nine Innovation Tech Tours on Friday.

EMERGING TRENDS

With five days of activities, thousands of conversations, 2,000+ people from 25+ countries all came together to discuss how technology, automation and innovation will continue to impact commercial, corporate and institutional real estate. It is clear the industry is trying to figure out the impacts on how we design, build, lease, operate, transact and use space.

The following are some of the big trends that emerged from Realcomm and IBcon 2018!
  • Big Changes: A very apparent theme that emerged was that the changes we are seeing as a result of more technology in our industry are major paradigm shifts and not just incremental changes.
  • Partnership: A consistent message heard was that the complexity of today’s technology requires that a partnership-type relationship between building owner/operator and vendor be in place.
  • Capital: The industry has never seen this amount of capital being invested in tech companies focused on the real estate market. Over $1.5B of new capital was represented at the conference.
  • Executive Attention: With the volume of technology and the potential impact, it is now more than ever, becoming a business discussion that requires consistent and thoughtful involvement of executives.
  • Saturation: With over 3,000 companies now selling automation to the industry and some solutions seeing more than ten competitors, many are wondering if the market is saturated.
  • Adoption: With so much technology to consider and existing cultures hard to change, many discussions focused on how fast an organization or the industry at large can absorb these new ideas.
  • Integration: Given the number of new solutions entering the market, many conversations focused on integration of these new products into existing enterprise strategies.
  • Collaboration: In order to successfully adopt a comprehensive innovation, automation or technology strategy in a real estate company, accelerated interdepartmental collaboration is required.
  • Industry Knowledge: There was a fair amount of discussion around the topic of technology startups not being familiar with Real Estate fundamentals and knowing what problems they are trying to solve.
  • Not Slowing Down: With the amount of new technology coming out of Silicon Valley and other tech centers around the globe, including AI, Machine Learning, Robotic Process Automation, Autonomous, Blockchain, Augmented and Virtual Reality and others, no one sees a slowing of the impact of the most recent emerging technologies.
