The Realcomm | IBcon 2017 conference, one of the most powerful gatherings for the commercial and corporate real estate, facilities and technology industries, was held June 12-16 in San Diego, CA. The event brought together leaders from more than 20 countries, including Canada, Australia, Singapore, China, India and many more. The turnout was remarkable and there was an undeniable buzz of energy, both of which contributed to one of the most successful events ever!

The week kicked off with a Golf Outing on Monday, followed by seven pre-conference events on Tuesday, two full days of education sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, and finished up with nine Real Estate Innovation Tech Tours on Friday.
Monday – June 12
GOLF OUTING It was a beautiful, sunny southern California day as 50 golfers hit the links at Torrey Pines Golf Course, one of the most renowned courses in the country. Special thanks to co-chairs Todd Januzzi, Paramount Group and Robert Entin, Vornado Realty Trust, for helping to organize and make this day such fun for all involved!
Tuesday – June 13
PRE-CON EVENTS More than 600 were in attendance for this year’s seven half day pre-conference events, which included the Cybersecurity Forum, CIO Roundtable, COO/CFO/CAO Innovation Summit, Higher Education Summit, Sustainability Executive Smart Building Symposium, Intelligent Buildings Boot Camp and the Smart Building Integrator Summit.
Wednesday – June 14
OPENING GENERAL SESSION The General Session kicked off the conference with a packed house. Focused on this year’s theme, CRE Tech 5.0 – Reaching New Heights in Commercial & Corporate Real Estate Innovation, the session explored the 30-year journey of how technology, automation and innovation has evolved and enabled our industry. An impressive line-up of highly respected speakers included: Larry Smarr, California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2); Matt Toner, CBRE; Jim Whalen, Boston Properties; Anant Yardi, Yardi; and Jim Bland, Tridium.
CONFERENCE LIVE More than 50 interviews with some of the best in the industry took place on our Conference LIVE news desk during the conference. Industry leaders discussed top-of-mind topics such as cybersecurity, CRE Tech 5.0 technologies, the changing workforce, CRE digitization, data/analytics and many others.
DIGIE AWARDS Congratulations to the 2017 Digie Award winners! For the past 19 years, these awards have recognized those companies, real estate projects, technologies and people that have gone above and beyond to positively impact our industry using technology, automation and innovation. Thanks to all the winners for your tremendous contribution to the industry.
Thursday – June 15
SMART BUILDINGS Best Practices Showcase Attendees had a unique opportunity to meet face-to-face with representatives of some of the most premier smart building projects in the world. More than 40 buildings, portfolios and campuses were on display in an interactive setting featuring case studies on energy conservation, operational efficiency, enhanced occupant experience, sustainability achievement and financial optimization.
EXPO HALL This year’s Exhibit Hall featured more than 150 real estate technology companies showcasing the latest industry-specific solutions and services. It was two days of continuous product demonstrations and networking. Our thanks to all of our sponsors and exhibitors who helped to make this one of our most successful events ever!
REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT TRACK This year’s two-day track was the most engaging and best attended ever. The conference provided a unique opportunity to examine several case studies, explore emerging new technologies share ideas, network and hear directly from industry-specific solution providers. Friday – June 16
REAL ESTATE INNOVATION TECH TOURS More than 200 attendees stayed an extra day to tour some of the city’s most innovative buildings and campuses. Tours included visits to Calit2 at Qualcomm Institute, Sempra Energy HQ, Scale Matrix Data Center and Genomics Accelerator, UCSD Advanced Energy Park, Qualcomm’s Smart Campus, San Diego’s East Village, Solterra EcoLuxury Net-Zero Apartment Community, J. Craig Venter Institute and San Diego’s Smart Airport.
There were some notable trends that stood out at this year’s gathering.
•   There are now over 2,300 companies providing technology solutions to commercial, corporate and institutional real estate firms
•  CRE Tech Investors are looking for saturation point; the market is expecting increased M&A activity in next 12-18 months
•  Digital Transformation is different than IT and everyone will be required to make the shift
•  Industry dealing with an adoption rate that is slower than the speed at which technology is advancing
•  Change management and succession planning are important issues impacting our industry
•  A technical skills shortage could begin to adversely impact our industry
•  Shifting business models are emerging in retail, office, industrial and hospitality, which are all adding to innovation disruption
•  Property Management and ERP platforms are becoming more comprehensive and expansive
•  Open, integrated and interoperable platforms are setting new benchmarks
•  Cybersecurity continues to be a challenge and must remain at the forefront of strategic planning
•  CRE Tech 5.0 Technologies: AI, Autonomous, Augmented/Immersive VR, Blockchain and others, are moving faster than anticipated
•  Artificial Intelligence could turn out to be one of the most transformational platforms in the history of computing
•  Traditional Building Automation, Smart Buildings and IoT are all merging into a common discussion
•  Leveraging data to better understand and engage tenants becoming top priority for building owners and managers
•  Sharing economy, from WeWork to Uber, now impacting all aspects of commercial real estate
•  Interest in CRE Tech, aka “PropTech,” now surging in Europe
•  Scientific principles now being applied to wellness and productivity in buildings
•  Slow, but steady maturation of IoT platforms now starting to be incorporated into building operations
