X-DELETED SESSIONS.ARCHIVE

Included sessions are:
CANCEL REIM Best Practices in DATA MANAGEMENT and BUSINESS PROCESS AUTOMATION (more info)
Most Investment Managers rely on multiple data sources within their existing business processes to provide them with up-to-date information about their real estate investments. Much of the operational, financial, debt, valuation, market and energy information moves from external “data suppliers” to internal systems where it must be aggregated, normalized and integrated correctly to ensure its usefulness. Then Asset and Investment Managers must process this information and rely on emails, wet signatures, eSignatures, filing systems and document storage to complete their “often-manual” business processes. During this session, we’ll hear how TIAA-CREF combined integration and governance into a symbiotic data management program that has completely transformed and automated their business processes.

Comprehensive Asset Management – Nextgen Portfolio Perspective (more info)
Having full command of property and financial data from one building is relatively easy; having full data from a portfolio perspective is a much more formidable undertaking. As real estate companies have grown, acquired more assets, developed more complex partnership structures and continually add more data to the mix, analysis and reporting has been elevated to yet another level of sophistication. Gone are the days of simple asset management. This comprehensive session will present the industry's leading asset management solutions and thought leaders, providing the foundation for a spirited discussion and debate on business drivers, functionality, integration and competitive differences.

The Emerging Convergence of Asset and Brokerage Management Solutions (more info)
It was once common that internal asset management solutions lived in a silo'ed environment and there was not much need for external integration. Much the same were the brokerage solutions that were focused on managing the status of the leasing process. With the recent success of a few industry-wide leasing solutions, the quest for even deeper integration continues. With the other part of the property story living inside operations platforms, how will we accomplish one comprehensive, integrated version of the truth? This illuminating session will include leaders from both the asset and brokerage management solution set to discuss this next level of integration.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) – Is it Ready for Primetime Adoption? (more info)
The concept of BIM has been around since the 1970s. BIM is a highly accurate virtual model of a building or facility that has been constructed digitally. The compelling reasons for organizations to adopt BIM are: consistency of building data from design through operations; major reductions in errors and waste throughout the construction process; a visualization tool to streamline ongoing operations and maintenance; and extraordinary macro insight, among others. Despite these strong drivers, there are only a few large organizations such as the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) who have deployed BIM at scale. This important session will provide an up-to-date perspective on the use of BIM in commercial and corporate real estate.

Changes Impacting REGULATORY COMPLIANCE Requirements for Registered Investment Advisers (more info)
Within the last 12 months, the SEC proposed new rules, forms and amendments to modernize and enhance information reported by Investment Advisers. The Financial Accounting Standards Board recently issued new guidance on lease accounting intended to improve financial reporting about leasing transactions. The Accounting Standards Update (ASU) will require disclosures to help investors and other financial statement users better understand the amount, timing and uncertainty of cash flows arising from leases. The SEC’s Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE) announced a focus on cybersecurity compliance and controls as part of its 2015 Examination Priorities. At this very timely session, we will explore the impact of these changes on modern data collection processes, data warehousing and reporting requirements.

PRE-CON: Real Estate Information Systems & Smart Buildings Cybersecurity Forum

***PLEASE NOTE NEW START TIME AT 8:00AM***

In 2014, the topic of cybersecurity began to make its way into mainstream conversations. High profile breaches such as the Office of Personnel (OPM) and Target thrust cyber threats into the daily headlines.

Fast forward to 2016 and the topic is still in the forefront. Almost 100% of our 2016 Advisors had cyber as one of their number one issues. The difference this year are that cyber budgets are in place, consultants have been hired and many have developed strategies and have begun to execute their plans. Where we were once captive to hype and fear, this year the sense is more quantify and execute. Additionally, most have come to the realization that this is a journey, not a destination, and will require consistent and constant attention.

The commercial and corporate real estate industry continues to have multiple layers of cyber related issues. In addition to all the traditional IT defenses required by every company regardless of sector, our industry has the challenge of protecting against the following additional cyber threats: 1) real estate specific IT solutions and processes, 2) the IP-infrastructure required for smart buildings and 3) cyber issues intertwined with physical building security systems.

This track will provide macro insight from some of the industries most respected cyber executives and perspectives from commercial real estate leaders regarding the comprehensive strategic planning required for our industry, live demonstrations of nefarious threat capabilities and table topic small group discussions for engaging interaction.

With so many different aspects of cybersecurity, finding consensus on the exact same topics at the same time can be difficult. Different organization sizes and types, varying levels of expertise and the cadence set by the organization – all determine where on the journey a firm lands. The best way to allow for efficient and effective communications is to allow individuals to seek out topics and people who share the same interest. PRE-CON: Commercial Real Estate CIO Roundtable

For over a decade, Commercial Real Estate CIOs from around the globe have been gathering once a year at Realcomm to address the pressing technology, automation and innovation issues of the day.

It has been acknowledged that, without peer collaboration, the pace of technological change is much too fast for one individual or organization to completely address the challenges. The Roundtable provides a forum to foster this type of information and knowledge sharing between peers.<

This by-invitation event addresses issues including cyber, organizational alignment, new innovations, IT strategy as well as a host of new topics identified each year. Developed with the cooperation of our two Co-Chairs in conjunction with the entire Advisory body, the programming for this event represents the most progressive, cutting-edge, relevant and timely topics.

Most importantly, the event provides an opportunity each year to reset the benchmarks for IT related issues for the industry and to provide an efficient distribution of information, which helps to mitigate risk and accelerate adoption of new innovative technologies.

Commercial Real Estate IT – State of the Industry (more info)
Date: 6/21/2016    Time: 1:05PM - 1:10PM    Location: Lower Level LL20A
The ongoing role of the CIO has changed dramatically. Long gone is the tactician whose main responsibility is to keep the servers running. Consumer technology, mobile, digital marketing, IoT, smart buildings, expanding and more tightly integrated enterprises, analytics, visualization, and increasing cyber threats are now part of the long list of daily tasks. Combine these with an increasing challenge to find talent and the need to be very business-centric, and it becomes clear that the new profile of a real estate CIO has evolved. This opening discussion, led by our two chairs Joe Rich and Tom Taddeo, will set the stage for the CIO Roundtable.

Making the Leap to Google Apps – A Study in Workforce Transformation (more info)
Date: 6/21/2016    Time: 1:42PM - 2:05PM    Location: Lower Level LL20A
The cloud discussion grows each and every day. A few years ago, the thought of running your organization's main applications in the cloud was only for the earliest of adopters. This is especially true for the base applications found in most large, mature enterprise environments such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Making the decision to switch all users in a large organization from Microsoft desktop apps to Google's Apps for Work is noteworthy, but actually managing such a large scale implementation, with all of the potential risks to adoption and business disruption, requires a strong change program, vision, courage, and of course, the right technology. In this session we'll hear how Irvine Company's technology leadership led this game-changing transformation with extremely high satisfaction ratings and how they are fundamentally changing the way its organization works!

PRE-CON: Commercial Real Estate COO/CFO/CAO Innovation Summit

The executive leadership of a Commercial Real Estate organization has an extraordinary number of major issues that need to be addressed on a daily basis. Over the last few years, technology is one of those issues that has moved from tactical to strategic.

Almost every aspect of a real estate operation is being influenced by technology, automation and innovation. Internal workflows, property operations and tenant communications are all being radically impacted. ERPs, leasing platforms, transaction and market platforms, new budget and forecasting tools, smart buildings, energy conservation solutions, social, mobile, analytics and the cloud, are just a few of the technologies changing how we lease, manage, transact and use commercial space.

Chief Operating, Financial and Administrative Officers can no longer avoid the strategic discussion involving technology and innovation. At the very least, their tenants are demanding more and more every day and that their buildings and landlords are in line with 21st century best practices. It is no longer acceptable for mobile phones to have no signal or maintenance requests to be delayed. At the other end of the spectrum, hyper-efficient business processes contribute positively to the overall performance of the organization and thus, impacts the value of the company and its assets.

This pre-conference event will provide Commercial Real Estate Executive Leadership and a forum to identify, discuss and debate the issues surrounding the impact that technology, automation and innovation are having on our industry. This forum will also foster a community of peers and likeminded individuals to network, exchange information and share best practices.

Innovation – Where Does Your Company Stand? (more info)
Date: 6/21/2016    Time: 1:30PM - 2:05PM    Location: Lower Level LL21C
Many very innovative people are frustrated because they don’t get a chance to shine. They might think it’s politics, or budget, or some unspecified institutional mindset getting in their way, but the unseen culprit is often organizational structure. Certain conditions are necessary for innovative ideas to flourish, and there is a mindset and culture an organization needs for new ideas and change to develop. Companies that inhibit talent cannot thrive, regardless of the quality of the people or their ideas. This vital presentation will review both the barriers and the catalysts found in various organizational structures and provide some guidance on how to change the former to the latter.

Real Estate Executive Leadership – Going From Tactical to Strategic Thinking (more info)
Date: 6/21/2016    Time: 2:25PM - 3:00PM    Location: Lower Level LL21C
Most commercial real estate executives will tell you that they view technology, automation and innovation from a tactical perspective. The reasons include: 1) it is not their area of expertise, 2) it is changing quickly, and 3) some are simply intimidated and choose to relegate it to tactical discussions. The reality is that technology is changing everything about buildings, including how we design, build, lease, operate, transact and use them. Executive leadership can no longer ignore the strategic impact technology, automation and innovation are having on our industry. This discussion will focus on viewing technology as a strategic framework.

The Real Estate Operating System (RE-OS) - An Integrated Platform for Better Decision Making (more info)
Date: 6/21/2016    Time: 3:25PM - 4:00PM    Location: Lower Level LL21C
There’s no question that real estate is going digital. Smart contracts will simplify construction agreements. Internet of Things will track and optimize maintenance, repair and replacement cycles. Identity management systems will authenticate permissions to access, alter and use building access, infrastructure and tenant systems. In order to function properly and cohesively, these often siloed systems must communicate with each other in such a way that data integrity is maintained, while cyber risks are minimized. BIM, virtual design and construction methodologies are tools now being exploited as the foundation for the RE-OS concept. This has been an emerging dialogue at Stanford Center for Integrated Facilities Engineering (CIFE). This timely session will present CIFE's thinking to date and seek input from the community of real estate executives as to the essential implications of ‘going all-in’ on digital responsibly.

Many feel that commercial real estate is still the same old business: find or build a property, improve the property, raise the rents, minimize the expenses and repeat. While the fundamentals are the same, the way we perform them are radically different, and technology is playing a major role. Technology and methodology are constantly being improved, and the types of people required to run a real estate company must follow. New titles such as Manager of Business Intelligence, Chief Information Security Officer, Data Governance Manager, Director of Quality Assurance, Customer Experience Specialist and Chief Innovation Officer are just some of the new job requirements to be discussed in this session.

Smart Buildings – Less Expense, Happier Tenants, Higher Value (more info)
Date: 6/21/2016    Time: 4:35PM - 5:10PM    Location: Lower Level LL21C
Not long ago smart buildings consisted of basic direct digital control (DDC) building automation systems and utilized fairly traditional facility engineers. Very rarely did executive leadership get involved in decisions around these basic building systems. Fast-forward to 2016 and smart, connected, high-performance, buildings are making their way into boardroom conversations. Lower energy bills, better operating margins, achievement of sustainability objectives, better occupant experiences, financial optimization and higher values are the business drivers at the center of the conversation. This informative segment will focus on the best practices for smart buildings, which companies are leading the trend, and why they make so much financial sense.

GENERAL SESSION: Commercial and Corporate Real Estate Innovation Starts Here

We always try and pick a theme that embodies the trends and messaging that is appropriate for a given year. There is so much going on this year in respect to technology, automation and innovation that it was very difficult to hone in on just one.

After much discussion and debate, it became very clear that our theme needed to reflect where we are holding the conferences this year, Silicon Valley. We chose San Jose – the heart of Silicon Valley – for a very specific reason. This area is known around the world as the center for life-changing, transformational, extraordinary innovation. What better place to hold the two leading conferences dealing with technology and innovation for commercial, corporate and institutional real estate!

The idea was simple: if we place our real estate technology event in the center of global innovation, we would copacetically rub off on each other. The Valley would learn more about real estate and our thousands of processes and procedures and we would see first-hand the speed that the region operates at and what they are preparing for the future.

Our General Session will follow this general theme.

Cade Metz is a WIRED senior staff writer covering Google, Facebook and other Silicon Valley giants. Tracking the progress of visionaries such as Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Elon Musk and others, he keeps in front of the Silicon Valley innovation that continues to change the world.

While recently covering the match between Google’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform, Deep Mind and the Korean Go Master Champion Lee Sedol, in which the AI platform, “capable of mimicking intuitive thought,” beat the human opponent four out of five times. Cade was able to observe and witness not only the technological breakthrough, but also the reaction of the world class technologists participating in the challenge.

AI, IoT, Blockchain, autonomous vehicles, virtual/immersive/mixed reality and 3D printing are just a few of the many new and transformative innovations being developed both in Silicon Valley and around the world and that Cade will be discussing at the Realcomm | IBcon 2016 General Session.

While many feel that these technologies are not realistic or too far out into the future to be concerned about, Cade’s presentation will provide real perspective on not only the potential of these new innovations, but offer some speculation on the timeframes that we might see them make their way into everyday life.

Finally, the dialogue will pivot towards commercial and corporate real estate and how these technological breakthroughs might impact the way we manage and use space. From driverless cars and parking garages to artificial intelligence interacting with a company and its market data systems to predict the future and autonomous buildings that run themselves, this could well be the most forward looking real estate discussion of 2016. This is a conversation near and dear to Cade as his wife Taylor is a seasoned industry real estate technology professional and is a managing director with Redirect consulting.

CREATING A DIGITAL REAL ESTATE COMPANY

There are hundreds of individual tactical technology decisions made on a daily basis that are necessary to keep a commercial real estate organization operational, relevant and competitive. However, there are also broader, far-reaching aspects that must be addressed to ensure the overall IT strategy is heading in the right direction. Business alignment, executive sponsorship, developing an innovation culture, team development and industry trends are just some of the high-level factors that make up the foundation of a comprehensive automation strategy. All of these will be covered in this important track.

Increasing the Value of Real Estate with Technology and Innovation (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 3:00PM - 4:00PM    Location: Lower Level LL21C
Traditionally, when most people discussed technology, it was really about back-office, efficiency and productivity, because (for the most part) automation could save time and money. While this still holds true, technology has, in recent years, become more forward-facing. Through the use of browsers and now mobile devices, it is much easier to reach and interact with customers. There have been recent case studies where very strategic technology initiatives have directly impacted not only savings but also revenue and client satisfaction, resulting in a higher valuation. Hear firsthand from the studies' project leaders on how innovation directly impacted the value of their real estate projects.

Open Platforms – Integrating Point Solutions into the Core ERP (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 4:30PM - 5:30PM    Location: Lower Level LL21C
In recent years, one of the most consistent topics in our industry has been the debate between single-stack vs. integrated best of breed. Some have argued that one unified database is far more efficient and effective than multiple solutions ‘stitched’ together. On the other side of the debate, the point solutions would hold firm to the idea that the superior functionality provided by the best of breed point solutions is a better way to go. With both solution sets changing and morphing on a daily basis, the definition of ‘open’ is also changing. This dynamic session will bring together both sides of the debate to bring clarity to this very hot topic.

Enterprise Architecture – Single Stack vs. Integrated Best-of-Breed (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 11:30AM - 12:30PM    Location: Lower Level LL21B
The automation of commercial real estate began with simple, single focused applications such as property management and accounting. Over the years, as real estate organizations expanded and became more complex, so too did their automation requirements. Today, there are hundreds of different processes required to effectively manage a real estate portfolio. The industry has chosen two distinctly different paths of automation architectures, Single Stack and Integrated Best-of-Breed. There is still much debate as to which of these is most effective and this session will present arguments from both sides of the aisle.

Automating the Lease Process – The Journey Continues (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 1:45PM - 2:45PM    Location: Lower Level LL21B
Automating the lease means different things to different people. Over the years, businesses have taken a variety of approaches to the automation of this process, depending on end-user needs or streamlining concerns. There are custom developed platforms, modifications of general platforms such as Salesforce and finally, the utilization of market systems such as VTS and Hightower, as the foundation for lease process automation. With such a diverse set of approaches, it is safe to say that the industry has not standardized on a unique methodology. This essential session will offer multiple points-of-view on this dynamic topic.

Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 3:00PM - 4:00PM    Location: Lower Level LL21B
Having full command of property and financial data from one building is relatively easy. But having a comprehensive perspective on how efficiently your organization is managing complex business processes around assets and investments is more intricate. There are still many important business processes that aren’t included in the core property accounting and management ERPs. Now, some of our executive leaders are looking to employ a new suite of tools to manage not only the data aggregation and visualization, but also the unstructured business processes and collaborative workflows involved in the day-to-day operations. This comprehensive session will present some compelling new asset and operational management solutions by real estate users and provide a foundation for a spirited discussion and debate on business drivers, functionality, integration and competitive differences.

BIM Repositories and Project Performance Monitoring for CRE (more info)
Date: 6/23/2016    Time: 12:30PM - 1:30PM    Location: Lower Level LL21C
As BIM technologies and enabling forms of collaborative project delivery continue to advance and gain broad market adoption, facility owners are: 1) increasingly required to learn, establish, and enforce what they want from BIM; and 2) continually driving the development of BIM standards, requirements, and means of evaluation. A few large organizations such as the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) have successfully deployed BIM at scale. Now, some facility owners are pushing beyond incremental BIM adoption to re-think workflows and transform project delivery processes. They are developing BIM object libraries and central data repositories as key tools in driving these changes. This important session will provide a perspective on the use of BIM in commercial and corporate real estate, with a long-term view toward realizing the value of investments, learning about best practices and technologies supporting project and building portfolio success.

SMAC - SOCIAL, MOBILE, ANALYTICS, CLOUD

Over the last few years, we have seen four major technology trends that have profoundly changed the way we look at computing. These were not incremental changes but rather fundamental, tectonic shifts. Social: connecting people in ways never imagined. Mobile: empowering people wherever they are. Analytics: insights at a much deeper level. And, the Cloud: easy, fast and inexpensive computing power – all of it taking innovation to new levels. This track will cover everything SMAC as it relates to commercial real estate automation.

We are probably in the third or fourth iteration of the mobile revolution, starting out with phones that only allowed talking, to today’s devices that are essentially multi-function computers. The real estate market has done a good job of embracing the current generation of mobile technology. As phones become even more powerful, have access to faster communications and are equipped with more sensors, we can expect their functionality to expand even more. Recent topics that have been in the news have included electronic payments, access control and enhanced medical capabilities. This session will explore ‘what’s next’ for mobile in our industry.

Data Analytics – Can We Accurately Predict the Next Real Estate Downturn? (more info)
Date: 6/23/2016    Time: 12:45PM - 1:45PM    Location: Lower Level LL20B
We’ve been contemplating data analytics (or big data, as it was once called) for more than five years, including discussions on the high cost of implementation, the proliferation of lower cost entrants to the market, the need for data scientists and more. The number one question today is, "Who has cracked the code to extraordinary insight?" Do we know if our rents are too low or if they have accelerated too fast? Which of our tenants will be out of business next year? Are market sectors systematically downsizing? Can we even predict the next downturn in our market? This crucial session will uncover extraordinary opportunities for analytics insight in commercial real estate.

Cyber Security as a Service – The Discussion Evolves (more info)
Date: 6/23/2016    Time: 12:30PM - 1:30PM    Location: Lower Level LL21B
There is almost complete agreement that cyber remains one of the top issues for 2016. Keeping IT infrastructures, which now include mobile, cloud and remote access, keeping it secure is becoming more challenging by the day. Whether it is hardware, software or human related, the to-do list continues to grow. Some are beginning to suggest that the best way to handle cyber is to not handle it at all and outsource it. Cyber as a service, where an outside organization takes over all cyber responsibilities, is beginning to gain some traction. This session will address all the important questions and issues relating to Cyber Security as a Service.

CRE TECH 4.0

Technology has been impacting Commercial Real Estate (CRE) for over 30 years. Its influence started with property management systems, continued through the boom and bust of dot-com, then to the steady adoption of post dot-com, and finally on to CRE Tech 4.0. The latest chapter in CRE technology innovation started around 2010-11. With hundreds of new startups and an extraordinary amount of investment, this timely track will distinguish the hype from reality and provide some context in this latest innovation phase.

Included sessions are:
CRE Tech Investments – Venture Capital and Investors Weigh In (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 11:45AM - 12:45PM    Location: Lower Level LL20B
Most people became familiar with the concept of venture capital and private equity investment during the dot-com boom/bust. While numbers in the general technology sector were extraordinary, the commercial real estate tech sector reached over $2 billion in investments during this period. For the current revolution, over $3.5 billion has been invested in RE and CRE Tech since 2010, with over $1.5 billion in 2015 alone. With such a high volume of investment, everyone is asking, "Is the CRE tech bubble bursting??" Who better to answer than the investors themselves? This panel of seasoned CRE tech investors will offer some perspective to a timely and relevant topic.

The Real Estate Technology Revolution – A Market Review (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 2:00PM - 3:00PM    Location: Lower Level LL20B
Although we are currently experiencing a CRE Tech Revolution, it is not the first, nor will it be the last. For over 30 years, companies have been automating the processes involved with owning and operating buildings. This current chapter does, however, have nuances that distinguish it from earlier marketplaces: 1) there has been a sizable (some would say overheated) investment of capital by VCs and others; 2) the concept of an ‘app’ that is a simple one-process fix has lured many into the mix; and 3) there are an inordinate amount of new companies with mixed levels of expertise. This session will provide a comprehensive overview of the CRE Tech 4.0 marketplace.

FRACTIONAL INVESTMENT IN TECHNOLOGY – Leveraging the Capital Investments of Others (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 3:15PM - 4:15M    Location: Lower Level LL20B
There are many roads to acquiring the technologies necessary for improving commercial real estate enterprise operations. The IT organization can BUILD by starting from scratch and developing a platform from the ground up, or they can BUY off-the-shelf solutions and customize as necessary; alternatively they can RENT a managed services resource, or finally INVEST in, or buy outright, a tech start-up with a promising solution. This panel will explore options for enabling companies to get the benefits off state-of-the-art technology and integrated processes without having to bear the full capital and human costs typically involved.

All eyes are on View The Space's (VTS) company Founder and CEO, Nick Romito. With the speed at which his venture has reached market share in 14 major US cities, one can safely conclude that the online-leasing evolution has begun. Using the latest CRE technology and a video platform, brokers and potential tenants alike can now tour thousands of vacant spaces from their desktop, tablet or smartphone and share them with their colleagues, clients, etc. The outcomes of these “shares/view” are also trackable, supplying streamlined, accountable results to all involved in the leasing process. Previously, he was a Managing Director at Titan Global Advisors where he spearheaded the tenant-rep and agency side of the brokerage division, bolstering its business development platform.

INNOVATION UNLEASHED - SILICON VALLEY AND BEYOND

There is a reason they call it the most innovative place in the world. For nearly half a century, Silicon Valley is where some of the most innovative and disruptive technology in the world was discovered and developed. Starting with transistors and microchips all the way to search engines, social media, and shiny new taxi cab companies, numerous corporations shared ideas too prolific to list here. This enlightening track will focus on the new generation of ideas emerging from both Silicon Valley and other technology centers around the world: autonomous cars, immersive reality, robots, drones, wearable technology and more.

Included sessions are:
Virtual, Augmented, Mixed, Immersive Reality – A New Way to Look at Real Estate (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 11:45AM - 12:45PM    Location: Lower Level LL20A
3D models of real estate have been around for a long time. They range from very basic, cartoonish-looking examples to stunning, highly realistic renderings. This basic concept of showing a digital representation of space has gone to the next level. Combine near-realistic digital images imposed on top of real 3D life space and the result is an augmented or mixed reality. Visualize having a virtual office configuration appear as you walk an empty space. Or imagine a maintenance person looking at a piece of equipment and getting step-by-step repair instruction by a remote expert. This innovative session will demonstrate how this next generation technology will change design, construction, leasing and operations forever.

Artificial Intelligence – How Close Are We? (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 2:00PM - 3:00PM    Location: Lower Level LL20A
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a feature in many science fiction movies, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Matrix, RoboCop, and Ex Machina. Some would remind us that futuristic movies often come true, and that is the case with AI. Recently a top team of Google AI specialists beat the Korean Go Champion four out of five times. Beyond this stunning victory for AI, we also see this evolving technology finding its way into phones, autonomous cars, office functions and more. What is the next step? Will it be targeted, or mass adoption? This will be an open and honest discussion on the future of Artificial Intelligence.

Autonomous Cars – Traveling to Buildings and Beyond (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 3:15PM - 4:15PM    Location: Lower Level LL20A
Most people think that autonomous cars are years away from becoming mainstream. They would be surprised to learn that self-driving cars are more feasible than they think; many vehicles already offer semi-autonomous features. Certainly they will play a role in our way of life, and it will have a profound impact on how we build and operate commercial/ corporate real estate. How will autonomous cars work in parking garages or underground? What if there’s a failure with the telemetry equipment, who is liable? What will future parking garages look like? (Will we even need as many?) Leaving a meeting and ordering a driverless Uber car will change travel forever, and this enlightening track will explore the numerous potential impacts on how we design and operate buildings.

Blockchain - The Opportunities and Challenges of Peer-To-Peer Platforms (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 4:45PM - 5:45PM    Location: Lower Level LL20A
Most people in the technology industry that deal with any type of payment process have at least heard of Blockchain. It is a form of digital transaction processing which is closely associated with Bitcoin, but has left many skeptical and unconvinced. That is all slowly changing as 45 financial institutions, including major firms such as Citi, Credit Suisse and JP Morgan, have joined a consortium called R3 to evaluate and test Blockchain. The real estate industry, with its many transactions ranging from deed transfers to tenant leases, could be a perfect candidate for this technology. Still early in the game, this thought-provoking session will attempt to define the status of Blockchain and the effects it may have on our industry.

Robots and Real Estate – From Cleaning Crews to Delivering Coffee – A Reality Check (more info)
Date: 6/23/2016    Time: 10:45AM - 11:45AM    Location: Lower Level LL20A
Only a few years ago, the idea of robots in our everyday lives would have been considered too George Jetson-ish. However, with industry giants like Google purchasing a number of robotics companies, and solutions for roving security, vacuuming floors, cleaning windows and cutting lawns becoming more mainstream, maybe that futuristic vision has arrived. Already, there are some industry leaders that believe that the security as well as cleaning and janitorial service industries could be greatly impacted by robotic technology. The goal of this session is to assess the role of robots in our buildings, and differentiate hype and truth to help us prepare for the eventual reality of this technology.

Drones and Buildings – Where Are We on the Adoption Curve? (more info)
Date: 6/23/2016    Time: 12:45PM - 1:45PM    Location: Lower Level LL20A
Drones are another ‘future-tech’ topic that may be closer to mass adoption than previously thought. Three years ago, when we began discussing drones in commercial and corporate real estate, there were only a few engaged in the idea. Views from the top floors of buildings not yet built, flyovers of expansive properties, roof inspections, energy audits, security response and traffic monitoring are just some of the applications being considered in our industry. This instructive session will review the current state of drones, including important aspects such as technology, legislation, privacy, liability, adoption and other major issues.

Date: 6/23/2016    Time: 1:45PM - 2:45PM    Location: Lower Level LL21C
Wearable technology started with fitness devices and smart watches. In a very short timeframe this first generation of ideas has reached mainstream adoption—and this is just the beginning. Big and small companies alike are racing to bring wearables to the market. Shoes, shirts, pants, headbands and glasses are loaded with sensors and communications to enhance user experience. While the immediate benefits are easy to see, not so obvious are the management questions for building owners; safety, security, privacy and liability will all have to be considered when armies of wired people arrive at buildings. This session will shed light on the impact wearables will have on real estate.

Marketing Differentiators in PERFORMANCE REPORTING (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 1:45PM - 2:45PM    Location: Lower Level LL21A
Most real estate investment firms are familiar with property-level returns due to the NCREIF Property Index (NPI). Compliance with the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS), however, requires fund or investment-level methodologies. Including global performance data from the Investment Property Databank (IPD) offers advantages for those who successfully integrate this into their investor reporting structure. Those seeking independent verification of their performance reporting using these published standards will gain valuable marketing advantages. Combining multiple data sources to reach this pinnacle reporting level can be a real challenge. Join our panel members, who are at various stages of this process to automate the calculation and reporting for these various returns, and learn about their approach, challenges and successes.

Enhancing Operational Efficiency Through COLLABORATIVE WORKFLOW (more info)
Date: 6/22/2016    Time: 3:00PM - 4:00PM    Location: Lower Level LL21A
Most companies have a core set of common processes that occur multiple times each day in nearly every functional area of the business. Managers want to get accurate project updates in order to provide guidance that impacts their direct report’s to-do list. Individual employees and contractors follow checklists and perform inspections. Business application users search for help in documentation and how-to manuals. Senior executives are presented facts through established reports using common filters and drill-down keys. But what if there was one user portal that pulled all of this information together in a common format for everyone to use? At this session, you’ll hear how and why Rockpoint Group decided to leverage a new, collaborative workflow tool to manage unstructured processes and provide a common interface to the entire company.

Date: 6/23/2016    Time: 8:30AM - 10:00AM    Location: Lower Level LL21A
Based on our feedback from hundreds of previous attendees, one of the most valuable reasons to attend Realcomm is networking with your counterparts. Do you have questions about the latest vendor announcements? Are you looking for a reliable consultant with a proven track record? Wondering how the latest acquisitions are going to impact your vendor’s ability to continue delivering results? This session is an excellent opportunity to get “unedited” feedback from IT leaders who have “been there – done that!” We will provide multiple opportunities for targeted discussions as well as open networking. This session alone may be reason enough to justify sending multiple people from your organization in order to cover even more ground in these simultaneous discussions!

Date: 6/23/2016    Time: 11:45AM - 12:45PM    Location: Lower Level LL21A
In most of the industry, real estate business processes are largely manual and rely on emails, wet signatures, eSignatures, manual document storage, etc. This session focuses on the need to formalize these processes and automate them with workflow and collaboration tools. One custom-developed solution uses Microsoft SharePoint as the development platform for workflows, forms, and document storage/ collaboration. At this informative session, we will discuss this tool and its impact on Acquisitions, Asset Management, Middle Office, Dispositions, and document management functions. We will also introduce the concepts around replacing repetitive tasks with “bots” – an evolving process known as Robotics Process Automation (RPA).
